The Australian dairy industry has welcomed the Report of the Commonwealth Senate Inquiry into the Labeling of Alternative Proteins.
Australian Dairy Industry Council (ADIC) chairman Rick Gladigau said the report’s recommendations recognized the market failure highlighted by ADIC in its submission to the investigation.
“The report’s recommendations substantiated concerns expressed by our industry for years,” he said.
“The dairy industry’s false leverage is a long-standing problem.
Plant-based products have misused dairy terms and distorted dairy nutrition, to the detriment of our industry. »
He said Australian consumer perceptions of dairy products have been affected by the overuse of dairy terms and nutritional information by plant-based processed alternatives.
“The report’s recommended overhaul of the Australian and New Zealand Food Standards code and the exemption of named ‘categories’ of meat, seafood and dairy products – meaning that terms such as soymilk do not should not be allowed – is the first step needed to address these misconceptions,” Gladigau said. .
“Another of the report’s recommendations – the development of guidelines to inform labeling and marketing practices for manufacturers of plant-based protein products – is also an initiative that our industry supports.”
Mr Gladigau said the dairy industry now wanted to see bipartisan support for the report’s recommendations, with the development of a mandatory regulatory framework for the labeling of plant-based protein products, in consultation with the industry, being priority.
“We want Australia to align with countries like Europe and Canada, which have outright banned the misuse of dairy terms, or the United States, which requires a clear distinction between dairy products and herbal products,” Mr. Gladigau said.
“Australian consumers should not be misled.
“Labelling and nutritional information must be transparent.
“They should trust that what they put in their grocery cart is what it says.”
